Summary:

Six major wildfires in Southern California within a week (since October 24)
Burned: 700,000 acres. Destroyed: 3,346 homes. Killed: 20 people, including 1 firefighter.

On Friday, October 31st, the season's first storm brought cooler temperatures, rain, and even snow in the mountain areas. It helped significantly to contain and extinguish the blazes.


  • Los Angeles County

    Impacted by the Western flank of the Grand Prix fire (see San Bernardino County) reaching into areas north of the City of Claremont.
    Impacted by the Eastern flanks of the Simi/Val Verde and Piru fires.


  • Riverside County

    Mountain Fire

    10,331 acres burned: 100% contained

    Homes lost: 21

    No Fatalities

    Fire fighting efforts: $2.2 million


  • San Bernardino County

    Grand Prix & Old Fire

    162,000 acres burned: 65% to 95% contained

    Homes lost: 902

    Fatalities: 4

    Fire fighting efforts: 5,800 personnel, 200 engines and 31 helicopters at a cost of $31.3 million


  • San Diego County

    Cedar Fire

    285,000 acres burned: 90% contained

    Homes lost: 2,232

    Fatalities: 14, including 1 firefighter

    Fire fighting efforts: 4,300 personnel, 530 engines and 27 helicopters at a cost of $9.8 million


    Paradise fire

    57,000 acres burned, 60% contained

    Fatalities: 2

    Homes lost: 169

    Fire fighting efforts: 1,608 personnel, 60 engines and 13 helicopters at a cost of $4.35 million


  • Ventura County

    Piru Fire


    64,000 acres burned, 80 percent contained.

    Homes lost: 1

    No fatalities.

    Fire fighting efforts: 331 personnel and 3 helicopters at a cost of $6.3 millions.


    Simi/Val Verde Fire

    117,000 acres burned: 100% contained.

    Homes lost: 37

    Homes damaged: 11

    No Fatalities.

    Fire fighting efforts: 1,500 personnel, 32 engines and 4 helicopters at a cost of
    $9.2 million
