Railway crashes in Britain

1915 May 22 Gretna Green: a troop train collided with a passenger train, 227 people died.

1988 November 12 St. Helens, Merseyside: a commuter train hits a bridge after leaving the station; the engineer died and 18 passengers were injured.

1988 December 12 London: three morning rush-hour trains were involved in a crash at Clapham Junction, south London, 35 people died.

1989 March 4 London: two trains collided outside Purley station, south London; 5 people died and more than 90 were injured.

1989 March 6 Glasgow: two suburban trains crashed head-on; 2 people died

1997 September 19 London: a passenger train collided with a freight train at Southall, west London; 7 people died and 150 were injured.

1999 October 5 London: two passenger trains collided head on at Ladbroke Grove, west London, close to Paddington station, after one of the trains had passed a red signal; 31 people died.

2000 October 17 London: a high-speed train derailed between London and Leeds at Hatfield, 18 miles (30 km) north of London; 4 people died.
