Mediterranean Sea, Aegis, Island of Ios: underwater explosion of the Volcano Colombo northeast of the Island of Thera produced waves up to 52 feet

1896 Japan: worst tsunami in Japan's history, undersea quake about 100 miles offshore triggered waves up to 80-foot high; more than 22,000 people perished.

1946 April 1st. Hawaii, Hilo: waves up to 55 feet high triggered by an 7.1 earthquake in the Aleutian Islands of Alaska destroyed buildings, railway tracks, and beaches; 159 people died

1992 Nicaragua, coastline: offshore earthquake produced waves up to 50-foot
