Aircraft accidents are rare events, but extremely complicated and challenging. Improved safety features have made plane crashes more survivable. This may lead to multiple occupants being trapped inside a broken and twisted fuselage.

Contributing to the complexity of an aircraft rescue is the ridged design and the multitude of construction materials, structural features, and systems involved. Some examples are aluminum, magnesium, steel, composite materials, plastics, fuel, hydraulics, oxygen, cargo, cabling, wiring, piping, windows, and doors.

Emergency services use rescue tools on a daily basis at vehicle accidents. These tools and equipment have not been adequately utilized or evaluated on actual large jet aircraft.

To assist manufactures and vendors on one side and end users (fire, rescue, emergency medical, law enforcement, military, and aviation safety professionals) on the other, the Aircraft Rescue Research Project (ARRP) offers the unique opportunity to bring together ALL the tools, equipment, materials, and resources that could be utilized to find persons trapped inside crashed aircraft, extricate and remove them to waiting ambulances or helicopters.

On April 26-29, 2005, ARRP will provide large jet-aircraft, unlimited area to display and demonstrate, and the venue for this purpose. The fuselages are intact with seats, insulation, interior finish, windows, doors, and systems. One of the aircraft will be dedicated to stabilization and lifting demonstrations. There will be static displays of aircraft components. There is also an emergency vehicle course available, which incorporates both on and off road driving conditions. This is an outdoor event, totally focused on rescue and emergency medical operations.

ARRP is interested in showcasing and demonstrating following types of products used to render an aircraft crash scene safe for rescue operations; gain access and search; perform forcible entry, extrication, and rescue; triage, move, and treat patients when rescued; and manage multi-casualty incidents.

  • Fuel leak control and containment
  • Shoring, cribbing, and other stabilization equipment
  • Foam concentrates, proportioning, and application equipment
  • Piercing and penetrating nozzles
  • Flashlights, portable lighting, and generators
  • Ladders and other access equipment
  • Search cams and thermal imagers
  • Head, hand, foot, and eye protection
  • Firefighting, rescue, and emergency medical protective clothing
  • Striking, prying, and cutting hand tools
  • Manual and power cutters, spreaders, and rams
  • All types of saws and saw blades
  • Cutting torches and other cutting devices
  • Air bags, jacks, and other types of lifting devices
  • Litters, backboards, and patient packaging systems
  • Tents and shelters
  • Incident command and multi-casualty management materials
  • Bio-hazard and decontamination equipment
  • ARFF, rapid intervention, and rescue vehicles
  • Rescue training facilities, resources, and materials

ALL manufacturers and vendors of rescue equipment (i.e., hand, hydraulic, pneumatic, and power tools, airbags and other lifting devices, saws, penetrating nozzles) are invited to evaluate and showcase the capabilities of their products.

This program is being planned and organized by firefighters for everyone and anyone interested or involved in rescue operations. This is a no fault program. Nothing negative will be noted regarding any product. We are only interested in showcasing available rescue resources and identifying ways to effectively use them in an aviation emergency environment.

The entire event will be professionally photographed and videotaped. These images and videos will be made available for manufacturers and emergency services. Information gathered will be utilized to develop magazine articles, training materials, and training programs.

We invite all fire, rescue, emergency medical, law enforcement, military, and aviation safety professionals to attend this first-of-its-kind event. You will learn what tools, equipment, and materials are available for multi-casualty rescue operations. From manufacturers, you will learn how to use the wide variety of rescue products in a safe and efficient manner. You will also have the opportunity to share your views and experiences with all attendees.

Participating in this research project will enable you to adequately outfit your rescue organization and make an informed decisions when purchasing equipment and tools in the future.

We will be advertising and announcing this event in Fire Engineering, Firehouse, and other fire and rescue publications. We are involving the ARFF Working Group, International Aviation Fire Protection Association, and Aviation Fire Journal in the program. Please see the links provided with this website announcement.
