2000 December 23rd. Tahiti, Papeete,
Faa Airport: Hawaiian Airlines DC-10 overshot the runway on landing
and came to a stop just before a lagoon; all 160 people deplaned via
emergency chutes and were not hurt.
2001 March 4th U.S., Arizona, Phoenix
International Airport: Southwest Airlines Boeing 737, Flight 2021 from
Los Angeles, with 119 people aboard skidded off the runway. The pilots
apparently misjudged the length of runway, which is used to be 11,500
feet long but is now shortened to 6,000 feet because of an ongoing construction
project. The airplane sustained some damage to its right wing, which
hit some construction barriers. No injuries were reported and a stairway
was used to get off the plane safely. Emergency chutes were not deployed.
2001 March 9th. U.S., Colorado, Denver
International Airport: an Air Wisconsin twin-engine turboprop commuter
plane, flying for United Airlines, ended up on the side of the runway
after landing; it is reported that a tire locked up and forced the plane
to do a U-turn; off the 18 people aboard, 1 flight attendant was injured
A United Airlines spokesman referred questions to Air Wisconsin officials,
who did not answer phone calls late Friday.
2001 March 23rd. USA, Alaska, Cold
Bay (population 65): a Delta MD-11, flight 79, enroute from Los Angeles
to Tokyo made an emergency landing at the Alaskan tundra airport after
the crew smelled smoke in the cabin; no one of the 220 passengers was
injured.
2001 March 25th. USA, Maryland, Baltimore
International Airport: a Southwest Airlines Boeing 737, flight 459 plane
with 141 people on board ran off a taxiway while preparing for takeoff;
no one was injured.
2001 April 13th. Poland, Gdansk Airport:
A Polish LOT Embrayer plane skidded off a slippery runway when trying
to land in a snowstorm, the plane came to a stop 120 yards beyond the
runway; the plane did not sustain major damages and none of the 40 passengers
were injured |
