Earthquake Preparedness

Before an Earthquake

Know how to turn off water, gas, and electricity at your home.
 

 

Have an Earthquake Survival Kit (can be purchased in various sizes at hardware stores and disaster preparedness outlets, or you can make your own kit) with at least the following items:
 
 

Flashlight with batteries

Radio (portable, battery-powered)

First Aid Kit with handbook

Food (canned, freeze-dried, or dehydrated)

Water (bottled)

Can opener (manual)

Prescription medication, aspirin, spare eye glasses

Camp stove, fuel, lighter or waterproof matches

Cooking utensils

Cups, plates, etc. (paper or plastic)

Towels and moist towelettes

Blankets/sleeping bags

Change of Clothes and sturdy shoes

Personal hygiene supplies

Tools
(i.e., work gloves, rope, hammer, knife, pliers, crescent wrench)

Fire extinguisher

Cash money

Copy of essential documents
(insurance policies, birth certificate, ID)

List of important phone numbers and addresses

DURING an Earthquake

Check for injuries and provide first aid
 
Check for building damage, and leave buildings that might be unsafe
 
Check for
 
  gas and water leaks

sewage breaks

downed powerlines

electrical shorts
  Shut off damaged utilities

DON'T use candles, matches or any open flames

DON'T use the telephone except for emergencies
