Prison Fires



1930 April 21st. USA, Ohio, Columbus, State Penitentiary: 320 inmates died

1967 July 16th. USA, northern Florida, Jay Prison Camp: 37 men died

2001 May
- Northern Chile, Iquique: a fire was deliberately started by prisoners in a facility housing 1,700 inmates; at least 26 prisoners died.

2002 May - Algeria, Sarkadej Prison: fire; at least 18 prisoners died and 11 others were injured.

2002 December 30th - Northeastern Iran, Gorgan, capital city of the Golestan province: a fire broke out around 3.20 a.m; at least 27 inmates died and 50 others were injured.

2003 April 5th - Honduras, El Porvenir: during an uprising that began with clashes between gang members some prisoners were locked in their cells, doused with gasoline, and set on fire; nearly 70 people, including guards and visitors, died.

2003 September 15th - Saudi Arabia, Riyadh: A fire started around 11.30 a.m. in the Al-Hair Reformatory, about 30 km south of the capital; around 100 people were jailed in the stricken wing No. 19; 67 inmates died and 23 people (20 prisoners and 3 guards) were injured.

2004 May 17th - Honduras, San Pedro Sula: a fire sparked by a short-circuit in an overheated refrigerator motor in a cell block housing 186 prisoners; the prison in northern part of the country had room for 800 prisoners, but held approximately 2,000 at the time of the fire; at least 103 inmates died (some were burned to death others died from smoke inhalation) and more than 25 were injured
