IAEM Region IX
At the Riverside Meeting on November 4, 2001 the following persons have been elected/appointed
*to be confirmed IAEM International
Committee Meeting Attended by: Janet Dilling/Florida State University, Jeff Glick/FEMA, Bob Heal/East Lyme OEM, Gunnar Kuepper/EDM, James Littlewood/Ottawa-Canada OEM A. Partnership/Cooperation with the Organization Local Authorities Confronting Disasters and Emergencies (LACDE) Jeff Glick from FEMA introduced LACDE to the Committee. LACDE's goals are to increase the effectiveness of local authorities to prepare for and confront disasters and emergencies, and mitigate the damage of potential disasters, natural or man-made; to promote the study of disaster management and prevention, in conjunction with appropriate national and international organizations; to establish a permanent document repository for coordination and collection of material. FEMA/Jeff is expected to host an executive board meeting of LACDE this month in Washington, DC. Jeff will look into the possibility of having IAEM join the event, will give a brief presentation about IAEM, and [explore the] means of a partnership agreement. Beth Armstrong is
expected to attend, probably together with Janet Dilling and/or Gunnar
Kuepper. Committee members expressed concerns that the current CEM exam and requirements are solely focused on US issues, rules, regulations, and structures. Therefore, the CEM accreditation is of lesser value for EM professionals in Canada and other foreign countries. Janet Dilling, CEM, was assigned to liaison with the CEM commission to initiate a review of the current requirements. Jim Littlewood from Canada (a sovereign country!) will assist her efforts and provide thoughts and input from a Canadian perspective. C. The Committee underlined the importance of raising awareness for EM organizations and activities in other countries. The following steps were discussed and recommended: a) publish a list of or links to foreign and international EM organizations on the IAEM Website and in the IAEM Bulletin. Such information will be provided by Janet Dilling and Gunnar Kuepper/EDM. Details will be discussed with IAEM staff. b) Ask EM organization (foreign and international) to provide articles about their structures, goals, and activities for publication in the IAEM Bulletin. Details will be discussed with IAEM staff. c) Keep other EM organizations (foreign and international) regularly informed and updated about IAEM. This not only raises awareness about IAEM, but provides opportunities to participate, and may lead to increased international membership. All IAEM members, committees, and the Board are asked to support all activities that are designed to make IAEM a truly international membership organization. Gunnar J. Kuepper
