people died. 2001 September 29th - India, Northern Kashmir, town of Sopore: a fire broke out in a hotel and spread to nearby buildings; 12 people died. 2001 December 17th - France, Paris, Hotel du Palais on Place du Chatelet: a fire started in a rubbish bin at the bottom stairwell of the six-story building. The popular one-star tourist hotel is located near the Louvre museum; 4 people died and 18 were injured. The four victims choked to death on fumes as they tried to escape from rooms to the roof of the hotel. The fire went through all six floors, destroying the stairs and causing extensive damage to the entire building. 2003 March 5th

started in the first floor restaurant of the 21-story building, damaging
the first three floors and the fire escape stairs; 6 people died and
67 were injured 2005 April 15th - France, Paris, 9th. Arrondissement, Rue de Province: a fire started at 2 a.m. in the first floor and swept via stairwell through the six-story Paris-Opera hotel. The one-star hotel, located adjacent to the famous Galeries Lafayette department store, is used by budget travelers and by Paris Social Services for temporary housing. The hotel had only one stairwell, but a separate fire exit is not mandatory for older buildings in Paris. Many people were trapped in the upper floors; 20 people, including 10 children, died and 50 were injured, 12 of them in serious condition. |
