1883 January 10th. USA, Wisconsin, Milwaukee, Newhall House: Fire in the six-story hotel claimed the lives of 71 people

1892 February 7th. USA, New York City: Hotel Royal fire; 28 people died

1899 March 17th. USA, New York City, Windsor Hotel fire

1934 December 11th.
-- USA, Michigan, Lansing, Hotel Kerns: the four-story 211 room brick hotel was filled with 215 registered guests when a fire broke out in the early morning hours; 34 people, including 7 state legislators died and 44 were injured, including 14 firefighters

1938 May 16th. USA, Atlanta, Terminal Hotel, 35 people died

1943 September 7th. USA, Houston, Gulf Hotel, 55 people died

1946 June 9th. USA, Iowa, Dubuque, Canfield Hotel: 19 people died

1946 December 7th. USA, Georgia, Atlanta, Winecoff Hotel: Fire started around 3 a.m. in the 15-story building filled with about 300 guests, fire department notification was delayed and one open stairway was the only mean of escape. Hotel was considered 'fireproof'. 119 people died and 91 were injured

1959 June 23rd. Norway, Stalheim, Resort Hotel, 34 people died

1971 July 23rd. -- USA, Louisiana, New Orleans; fire broke out in a room on the 12th. floor of the 17-story building; 6 people died in an elevator

1971 December 26th. South Korea, Seoul, Hotel Fire, 166 people died

1973 September 1st. Denmark, Copenhagen, Hotel Fire, 35 people died

1974 South Korea, Seoul: Hotel Fire, 88 people died

1975 September 5th. Great Britain, London, Hilton Hotel: IRA bomb; 3 people died and 63 were injured.

1976 August 11th. - France, Paris, Hotel d´Amerique: fire: 11 people died

1977 May 9th. The Netherlands, Amsterdam, Hotel Polen: the early morning fire was reported with a 20 minute delay, 33 people died and 21 sustained severe injuries.

1977 May 23rd. Belgium, Brussels, Duc del Brabant Hotel: 302 people died

1978 January 28th. USA, Kansas City, Coates House Hotel, 16 people died

1979 July 12th. Spain, Zaragoza, Hotel Fire, 76 people died

*1980 Nov 21st. USA, Las Vegas, MGM Grand Hotel, 84 people died, about 700 were injured

1980 November 21st. Japan, Kawaji, Prince Hotel, 44 people died

1980 December 4th. USA, New York/Westchester County, Stouffer's Inn, 26 people died

1981 Feb 10th. USA, Las Vegas, Hilton Hotel, Fire broke out in the 8.th floor of the 30-story building, 8 people died, 252 were injured

1982 Japan, Tokyo, Akasaka district: hotel fire, 33 people died, 29 were injured

1983 May 7th. Turkey, Istanbul, Hotel Fire, 36 people died

1984 May 14th. Japan, Pusan, Hotel Fire, 36 people died

1986 January 23rd. India, New Delhi, Hotel Fire, 38 people died

1986 September 5th. -- Norway, Kristiansand, Hotel Caledonian: a nightly fire started in the lobby area and involved the first 4 floors of the 1968 building housing 113 registered guests at the time; 14 people died and 50 others were injured


1986 December 31st. Puerto Rico, San Juan: Dupont Plaza Hotel fire, 96 people died

1990 March 1st. Egypt, Cairo: Sheraton Hotel fire; 18 occupants died and 70 were injured

1992 August 22nd. - Germany, Sieglar, Königshotel: 12 people died

1993 March 23rd. -- USA, Chicago, Paxton Hotel, 1432 North LaSalle Street: four-story brick building with single room occupancy used as permanent or semi-permanent residency:

1994 December 31st. -- Belgium, Antwerp, Switel Hotel: 15 people died and 160 were injured


1995 March 14th. -- China, Province of Liaoning, city of Anshan: fire in a hotel at the top of a commercial building; at least 30 people died.


1996 January 18th
- Ethiopia, Addis Ad, Ghion Hotel: in a bomb explosion citizens from the United Kingdom, Mali, India, and France were hurt. Two months later, al-Ittihaad al-Islami (The Islamic Union), an ethnic Somali group, claimed responsibility for the bombing; 4 people died and 20 others were injured.


*1997 July 11th. Thailand, Pattaya Royal Jomtein Resort Hotel, 91 people died, 51 people seriously injured

1999 December 26th. -- China, Jilin province, city of Changchun: hotel fire; 20 people died.

2001 August 17th. -- Philippines, Quezon City (suburb of Manila), Manor Hotel: a fire started in a third-floor restaurant of the six-story building occupying more than 200 registered guests; 75 people died and more than 50 were injured

2001 September 29th - India, Northern Kashmir, town of Sopore: a fire broke out in a hotel and spread to nearby buildings; 12 people died.

2001 December 17th - France, Paris, Hotel du Palais on Place du Chatelet: a fire started in a rubbish bin at the bottom stairwell of the six-story building. The popular one-star tourist hotel is located near the Louvre museum; 4 people died and 18 were injured. The four victims choked to death on fumes as they tried to escape from rooms to the roof of the hotel. The fire went through all six floors, destroying the stairs and causing extensive damage to the entire building.

2003 March 5th -- South Africa, Johannesburg, Rand Inn International Hotel: fire started in the first floor restaurant of the 21-story building, damaging the first three floors and the fire escape stairs; 6 people died and 67 were injured

2004 May 1 - Italy, Rome, Parco dei Principi Hotel: Fire broke out on early Saturday morning on the 3rd floor of the 5-star luxury hotel located near the Villa Borghese Park; up to 350 guests, including many world class tennis players that stayed in the facility during the Italian open, had to be evacuated; 3 hotel guests (a couple from Canada and an American) died.

2005 April 15th - France, Paris, 9th. Arrondissement, Rue de Province: a fire started at 2 a.m. in the first floor and swept via stairwell through the six-story Paris-Opera hotel. The one-star hotel, located adjacent to the famous Galeries Lafayette department store, is used by budget travelers and by Paris’ Social Services for temporary housing. The hotel had only one stairwell, but a separate fire exit is not mandatory for older buildings in Paris. Many people were trapped in the upper floors; 20 people, including 10 children, died and 50 were injured, 12 of them in serious condition.
