Gas Pipeline Explosion in Belgium on July 30, 2004

- Belgium, Ath, Ghislenghien industrial park: an underground natural gas pipeline exploded around 8:30 a.m. about 20 miles southwest of Brussels; the pipeline, one meter (yard) in diameter, carries gas from the Belgian port of Zeebrugge to northern France, and is operated by a company named Fluxys; numerous buildings and cars in the immediate area have been destroyed by the blast; at least 15 people, including 5 fire personnel, died and more than 120 were injured.
