1956 - Japan, Minamata Bay, Chisso industrial plant:
Mercury poisoning developed in people who had eaten contaminated seafood taken from Minamata Bay and adjacent coastal waters in the period after World War II. The disease was caused by methyl mercury dumped into the sea as an unwanted by-product of acetaldehyde processing at the Chisso industrial plant in Minamata.

1976 - USA, Massachusetts: Argo Merchant ran aground on the Nantucket Shoals off Cape Cod and spilled 7.6 million gallons of fuel oil.

1978 - France, North Atlantic: oil tanker Amoco Cadiz ran aground off the coast and spilled 1.6 million barrels of crude oil.

1989 - USA, Alaska: oil tanker Exxon Valdez ran aground and spilled 11 million gallons of crude oil into Price William Sound.
