Home ] Summary: Emergency Planning in the USA - Post September 11th. The presentation
describes the most recent developments in emergency management and terrorism
preparedness within the United States. The 9-11-01 attacks, their effects,
and consequences will be illustrated. These events led to the creation
of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), which is charged
primarily with the protection of the flying public to and from the more
than 400 airports in the country. TSA is now a part of the newly formed
Department of Homeland Security (DHS). With more than 170,000 employees,
it is the third largest federal entity. DHS has absorbed 22 agencies
that heretofore functioned independently (i.e., FEMA), or were once
part of other federal departments. Therefore, DHS activities will not
be limited to terrorism preparedness and response, but will cover natural
and technological hazards and disasters as well. One of the most serious
threats to mankind, the newly emerging potential of disease-causing
biological agents will be discussed, with a focus on the differences
and real risk of bacteria and viruses as weapons.
