15th. - Brussels National Airport: Airplane Crash: a Sabena Boeing
707 crashed on landing approach; all 72 people on board and 1 person
on the ground died
1971 October
2nd. - West Vlaanderen: Airplane Crash: a British European Airways
(BEA) Vickers Vanguard 951 crashed after the tailplane separated from
the rest of the fuselage; all 63 people aboard died
1974 - Train Crash; 18 people died
1985 May - Heyzel Stadium
1987 March 6th. - off the coast of Zeebrugge: Ship Accident:
the car ferry "Herald of Free Enterprise" with 436 passengers
on board left the dockside -as usual- with the bow door open; outside
the harbor the vessel took water and sank on its side within 2 minutes;
193 people died.
1994 December 31st. - Antwerp, Switel Hotel: Fire; 15 people
died and 160 were injured
1996 February - E17 near Deinze; Automobile Accident

- Roeselare: Train Crash
1997 July 26th. - Ostend Airport: Plane Crash: a light aircraft
participating in an aerobatics display at an airshow crashed into a
crowd near a Red Cross tent. 9 people died, and 57 were injured
1998 January - E17 near Rekkem: Automobile Accident
1998 June 29th. - Stavelot: a truck filled with paint caught
fire. The driver jumped out of the vehicle, which crashed into a building
and exploded. The 17-century historic center of the town burned down;
2 people died

2001 March 27th. -- Pecrot (16 miles east of Brussels): Train
Crash: a crowded passenger train with four carriages heading south from
Leuven crashed head-on into an empty locomotive; 8 people died and 8
others were injured.
2001 April 18th. - Oostende Airport: Airplane Crash: an Ilyushin
IL-76MD cargo plane aborted takeoff after an engine fire warning and
overran the runway; all 8 occupants survived.
