Airplane Accidents 1979-1989

 

1980 March 14th. Poland, Warsaw, LOT Polish Airlines Ilyushin 62 crashed while attempting landing, 87 people died

1980 April 25th Spain, Canary Islands, Tenerife: Dan-Air Boeing 727, crashed into mountainside during landing approach at Tenerife Airport, all 146 people aboard died

1980 June 27th. Italy, near Sicily, Island of Ustica: Itavia (aero Transporti Italiani) DC-9, flight 870, experienced severe damage in flight, broke up, and plunged into the Mediterranean Sea near the island; all 81 people aboard died; a military maneuver is suspected as cause for the crash

1980 August 19th. Saudi Arabia, Riyadh, Saudi Arabian Lockheed Tristar made safe landing while burning, but passengers were unable to escape, all 301 people died

1981 February USA, California, Orange County, John Wayne Airport: Air California Boeing 737 crashed during landing and burst into flames 600 feet from an airport fire station, nobody died.

1981 May 7th. Argentina, Rio de la Plata: an Austral Lineas Aeras BAC One Eleven crashed due to windshear short of the runway while attempting to land; all 31 people aboard died.

1981 October 6th. The Netherlands, Moerdijk: NLAM Fokker F-28 Friendship crashed due to heavy turbulence; all 17 people aboard died.

1981 December 1st. Corsica, Ajaccio, Yugoslav BC-9 crashed into mountain on landing approach, all 178 people died

1982 January 13th. USA, Washington D.C., Air Florida Boeing 737 crashed during take off in the Potomac River, 75 people died, 4 survived

1982 June 24th. Indonesia, Jakarta, British Airways Boeing 747, simultaneous failure of all four engines due to volcanic ash, landed safe

*1982 July 9th. USA, New Orleans Airport, PanAM Boeing 727, crashed shortly after takeoff at 16:10, 144 people on board + 8 residents died

1982 September Spain, Malaga, DC-10 rejected takeoff, overun the runway and struck a building, tail section caught fire, 50 people died

1982 December 9th. Chile, La Sarena, Airport La Florida, F-27 crashed short of the runway, all 47 people died

*1983 June 2nd. USA, Ohio, Cincinnati Air Canada DC-9, emergency landing due to fire in the restroom, 23 people died

*1983 August 30th./September 1st. Near island of Sakhalin off Siberia, Korean Air Boeing 747 flight KAL-007, shot down by Soviet fighter, all 269 people died

1983 November 8, Africa, Angola, near Lubango: Angola Airlines Boeing 737 crashed shortly after takeoff and exploded on impact; all 130 people aboard died.

1983 November 26th. Spain, Madrid, Colombian Avianca Boeing 747 crashed near Mejorado del Campo Airport, 183 people died, 11 survived

1983 December 7, Spain, Madrid, Barajas Airport: Ground collision of an AVIACO DC-9 and a IBERIA Boeing 727 in heavy fog. All 42 people aboard the DC-9 and 51 occupants of the 727 died. 42 persons survived, with 30 of them sustaining injuries.

1984 Feburary 28th. USA, New York state, Jamaca SRS DC-10, ended up 600 feet from runway in Thurston Bay

*1985 June 23rd. North-Atlantic, Air India Boeing 747, mid-air explosion, all 329 people died

*1985 August 2nd. USA, Texas, Dallas/Fort Worth, Delta Air Lockheed Tristar crashed in a storm near the airport, 134 people died, 30 survived

*1985 August 12th. Japan, Mount Ogura/Tokyo, Japan Airlines Boeing 747, crashed into a mountain after takeoff, 524 people died, 4 survived

1985 August 22nd. UK, Manchester Airport: British Airtours Boeing 737 with 137 people aboard bound for the Greek Island of Corfu experienced an engine failure during takeoff; unbeknownst to the pilots the engine had disintegrated and started a massive fuel fire on the wings and underneath the fuselage; under the impression that a tire had blown burst, the pilots successfully aborted takeoff but wind intensified the flames that spread into the fuselage within less than two minutes; 55 passengers, almost all of them in the rear cabin were unable to evacuate in time and died in the fire and smoke condition.

1985 September 6th. Wisconsin, Milwaukee: Midwest Express DC-9 crashed after takeoff, all 35 people aboard died

1985 December 12th.Newfoundland, Gander, chartered Arrow Air DC-8, bringing American soldiers home for Christmas, crashed on takeoff, all 256 people died

1986 March 31st. Mexico, Mexico City, Mexican jet crashed in mountains, all 166 people died

1986 August 31st. USA, California, Cerritos; mid air collision between Aeromexico DC-9 approaching LAX and a Piper PA-28, 82 people died

1986 September 6th. Pakistan, Karachi Airport, Pan American World Airways Boeing 747, 375 people aboard held hostage, due to gunfire and grenade explosions 21 people died

*1986 October 4th.USA, Texas , Kelly Air Force Base, Southern Air Cargo Lockheed L-382G crashed after takeoff on the airport ground, all 3 people aboard died

1986 October 25th. USA, North Carolina, Charlotte Airport, Piedmont Boeing 737 overshot runway and ran into railway track resulting in fire

1986 December 12th. East Germany, Berlin: An Aeroflot Tupolev TU-134A
crashed after landing in fog on the wrong runway. 70 of the 82 people aboard died.

*1986 December 25th. Saudi Arabia, Arab Airport, Iraqi Airlines Boeing 737, shooting between hijackers and security personnel ended in an unsuccessful emergency landing attempt, 71 people died, 36 survived

*1987 May 9th. Poland, Warsaw, Polish Airliner Ilyushin 62M on charter flight to New York, crashed after takeoff, 183 people died

*1987 August 16th. USA, Michigan, Detroit, Northwest Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-30 bound for Phoenix crashes after takeoff and plunges to heavily traveled boulevard, 156 people died, 1 child survived

1987 October 14th. Africa, Angola near Kuito, Zimex Aviation Hercules was shoot down, 5 people died

1987 November 13th. USA, Colorado, Denver-Stapleton Airport: Continental Airlines DC-9, flight 1713, crashed on take-off in a snowstorm; 28 people died, 82 were injured.

1987 November 15th. USA, Colorado, Denver, Stapelton Airport: A Continental Airlines DC-9 crashed on take-off in a snowstorm due to insufficient de-icing; off the 82 people aboard 28 died and 54 survived with injuries

*1987 November 28th. Mauritius, South African Airways Boeing 747 on route from Taiwan to South Africa, due to a fire in the Cargo area, plane went down south of Mauritius in rough seas, all 160 people died

*1987 November 29th. Burma, Korean Air Boeing 747, explodes from bomb planted by North Korean agents and crashed into sea, all 115 people died

1987 December 7th. USA, CA, near Paso Robles, Pacific Southwest BAe 146 jet crashes, after a former airline employee shot the pilots, all 43 people died

1987 Chile, Calama, El Loa Airport, Boeing 737 crashed, 1 person died, 27 survived

1988 February 2nd. Germany, Mulheim: A Nürnberger Flugdienst (NFD)
Swearingen SA.227AC Metro aircraft was struck by lightning after which the right wing broke off during an uncontrollable descent. All 21 people aboard died.

*1988 February 3rd. USA, Tennessee, Nashville American Airlines McDonnell Douglas DC-9 experienced a fire in the cargo area during landing approach, after touch down all 126 people aboard made an sucessful emergency evacuation

*1988 April 28th. Hawaii, Aloha Airlines Boeing 737, in an altitude of 24,000 feet parts of the ceiling from the cockpit door to the front of the wing separeted from the plane, 1 flight attendant died, 65 people were injured.

1988 June 12th. Argentina, Posadas: an Austral Lineas Aeras MD-81 crashed short of the runway during landing approach in bad weather conditions; all 22 people aboard died.

*1988 June 26, France, Mulhouse-Habsheim Airfield: Air France Airbus A 320 crashed into a forest after a low-altitude flight demonstration at an airshow; 3 people failed to escape and died in the subsequent fire and smoke, 130 people survived, 34 of them sustained injuries.

*1988 July 3rd. Persian Gulf, Iran Air Airbus A-300, U.S. Navy cruiser Vincennes shot plane down, after mistaking it for an attacking jet fighter, 290 people died

1988 August 28th.West Germany, Ramstein Airforce Base, During air-show three jets from Italian Air Force air acrobatic team collided in mid-air and crashed, 3 pilots and 67 people on the ground died, hundreds were injured

*1988 August 31st. USA, Dallas/Fort Worth Airport Delta Boeing 727 crashed in takeoff, 14 people died, 94 people survived

*1988 December 21st. UK, Lockerbie, Pan American Boeing 747, bomb exploded at 19:00, all 259 people on board and 11 residents died

1988 Hong Kong, Airport, Chinese Airliner Trident overran the runway and plunged into the sea, 7 people died, 89 people survived

1989 January 8th. UK, Donington, East Midlands Airport, British Midland Airways Boeing 737, engine problems and pilot error (wrong engine had been shut down) caused a crash landing, 47 people died, 79 people survived

1989 February 18th. Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, Flying Tigers Boeing 747, Cargo jet crashed during landing approach

1989 February Hawaii, Honolulu, United Airlines Boeing 747 en route from Los Angeles to New Zealand lost parts of the airplane skin, 16 people died

*1989 March 10th. Canada, Dryden, Air Ontario Fokker 28, crashed after takeoff due to ice on the wings, 24 people died, 45 survived

1989 June 6th. East Germany, Berlin: An Interflug Ilyushin Il-62MK aborted the takeoff at liftoff after it was discovered the rudder and elevator were jammed. When the command was given to apply reverse thrust the flight engineer switched off the engines by mistake. The aircraft overran runway, collided with obstacles and caught fire. 20 of the 105 people aboard died.

1989 June 7th. Suriname, Paramaribo, Surinam Airways DC-8 en route from Netherlands crashed into jungle while making a third attempt to land in thick fog, 168 people died, 15 survived

*1989 July 19th. USA, Sioux City Airport, United Airlines DC-10, crashed on the runway during emergency landing due to failure of the hydraulic system, 111 people died, 185 survived

1989 July 27th. Libya, Tripoli: a Korean Air McDonnell Douglas DC-10-30 crashed on landing attempt; 75 of the 200 passengers and crew aboard died.

1989 September 8th. Danmark, Kopenhagen, Convair 580, mid-air break, 55 people died

*1989 September 19th. Niger, Tenere Desert, French UTA DC-10 Airliner, mid-air explosion due to a bomb, all 171 people died

*1989 September 20th. USA New York, LaGuardia Airport, USAir Boeing 737, one of the two engines failed during take-off, crashed in the East River, 2 people died, 61 survived
