Airplane Accidents 1939-1949

 

1944 August 23rd. US, Freckleton: U.S. bomber crashed into a school, 76 people died

1945 July 28th. USA, New York City: B-25 bomber crashed into the Empire State Building (between 78th and 79th floors), 13 people died including 10 residents

1946 December 25th. China, Shanghai: 3 China Air transport planes

1947 January 26th. Danmark, Copenhagen Airport: KLM DC-3 crashed, 23 people died

1947 February 15th. Columbia, Bogota: Avianca DC-4

1947 May 29th. USA New York, New York: United DC-4, between 43 and 53 people die

1947 May 30th. USA, Maryland, near Bainbrigde/Baltimore: a Eastern Air Lines DC-4 on route from Newark, NJ to Miami, FL with a scheduled stop at Baltimore airport went at a height of 4,000 feet suddenly into a nose dive and crashed into a wooded area; all 53 people aboard (4 crew and 49 passengers) died.

1947 September 5th - UK territory, Bermuda: a British South American Airways Avro 691 Lancastrian 3 aircraft, registration: G-AGWK with 20 people (5 crew and 15 passengers) on a scheduled flight from London had to circle Kindley field for 90 minutes due to bad weather (thunderstorms). During landing attempt the aircraft struck a radio mast. No fatalities.

1947 October 24th. USA, Utah, Bryce Canyon: United Airlines DC-6 crashed short of the airport, all 52 people aboard died.

1947 November 13th - UK territory, Bermuda: a British South American Airways Avro 691 Lancastrian 3 aircraft, registration G-AGWG with 16 people on board (4 crew and 12 passengers) experienced an engine fire at 9,000ft shortly after take-off from Bermuda Kindley field enroute to Santa Maria-Vila do Porto Airport (SMA). This engine was shut down, and the aircraft returned to Bermuda. Premature selection of full flaps down caused the aircraft to undershoot the runway. No fatalities.

1948 February 8th. Danmark / Sweden: DDL-owned Vickers Viking crashed off the coast of Sweden on its approach to Copenhagen airport, all 28 people on board died.

1948 June 17th.USA, Pennsylvania, Mt. Carmel: United Airlines DC-6 crashed under wired circumstances. The crew discharged CO2 into the cargo compartment after a fire alert. While doing an emergency descent to the nearest airport, the lowered nose forced the CO2 to leak out of the cargo compartment and accumulate in the cockpit, where the flight crew became asphyxiated. All 43 people aboard died.

1948 August 1st. Atlantic Ocean/West Africa: French Flying Boat Latecoere 631 disappeared with 52 people aboard

1948 August 29th. USA, Minnesota, Winoa: Northwest Martin 2-0-2 crashed, 37 people died

1948 October 21th. Scotland, Prestwick: KLM Constellation crashed, 34 people died

1949 July 12th. USA, California Simi Mountains: Standard Airlines

1949 November 1st. USA, Washington, D.C.: P-38 fighter collided with DC-4 airliner above airport, 55 people died
