Plane Crashes in Germany

1952 March 22nd. Germany, Frankfurt/Main: a KLM DC-6 crashed during landing approach in heavy fog and rain; 42 of the 47 people aboard died.


1953 October 14th. Germany, Frankfurt/Main: a Sabena Convair CV-240 lost engine power on takeoff and crashed; all 44 people aboard died.


1957 November 3rd. Germany, Duesseldorf: a Herfurtner airline DC-4 with 10 people aboard (7 crew and 3 passengers) enroute to New York with a stopover in Reykjavik crashed minutes after takeoff from Duesseldorf/Lohausen airport into a residential neighborhood; an IRS office and other structures are set on fire; 9 people (including 1 on the ground) died, 7 were injured.


1958 February 6th. Germany, Munich: a British European Airways (BEA) Airspeed AS 57 Ambassador "Elizabethan" plane crashed on takeoff during a snowstorm; 23 of the 44 people aboard died.


1960 December 17th. Germany, Munich: a twin engine Convair experienced engine failure a few minutes after take-off from Munich/Riem Airport. The plane struck the tower of a church and crashed into a major street in downtown. Burning fuel set fire to a tramcar; all 20 people aboard the plane and 32 occupants of the tram died.


1961 March 28th. East-Germany, Russelbach: a Ceskoslovenske Aeroline Ilyushin IL-18 exploded in mid-air and broke apart; all 52 people aboard died.


1966 January 29th. Germany, Bremen: a Lufthansa Convair CV-440 crashed on landing approach in bad weather and low visibility; all 46 people aboard died.


1968 August 9th. Germany, Pfaffenhofen: a British Eagle Airways Vickers Viscount 739A broke apart in-flight due to structural failure; all 48 people aboard died.


1971 September 6th. Germany, Hasloh: a Pan International BAC One-Eleven 515FB aircraft collided with a bridge shearing off both wings after a double engine failure during takeoff. The water-injection system to cool the engines was inadvertently filled with kerosene instead of water; 22 of the 121 people aboard died.

1972 August 14th. East Germany, Konigs Wusterausen near Berlin: An Interflug
Ilyushin Il-62 crashed after hot air, leaking from an air conditioning system in a cargo bay, melted insulation off cabling causing a short circuit in the stabilizing system. Melting insulation ignited flammable fluid which led to an uncontrollable fire that eventually weakened the structure until the tail fell off. All 156 people aboard died.

1975 September 1st. East Germany, Leipzig-Halle: A Interflug Tupolev TU-134 descended below the glide path and struck a radio tower short of the runway. 26 of the 34 people aboard died.


1986 December 12th. East Germany, Berlin: An Aeroflot Tupolev TU-134A
crashed after landing in fog on the wrong runway. 70 of the 82 people aboard died.

1988 February 2nd. Germany, Mulheim: A Nürnberger Flugdienst (NFD)
Swearingen SA.227AC Metro aircraft was struck by lightning after which the right wing broke off during an uncontrollable descent. All 21 people aboard died.

1989 June 6th. East Germany, Berlin: An Interflug Ilyushin Il-62MK aborted the takeoff at liftoff after it was discovered the rudder and elevator were jammed. When the command was given to apply reverse thrust the flight engineer switched off the engines by mistake. The aircraft overran runway, collided with obstacles and caught fire. 20 of the 105 people aboard died.


1991 December 22nd. Germany, Heidelberg: A Classic Wings airline DC-3A struck a hill during a sightseeing tour while making a left turn in turbulence. 28 of the 32 people aboard died.


2001 December 26th. Germany, Bremerhaven: A BAL Bremerhaven Airline Islander aircraft crashed, 7 of the 9 people aboard died.
