Aftermath

San Diego County: Response Criticized

Residents, politicians and fire fighter union representatives complained of a lack of resources at local fire stations and questioned the level of preparedness for fire agencies in the county.

Also controversial was the CDF's (California Forestry Department) decision to forbid military helicopters stationed at nearby Miramar Naval Air Station from dropping water on the Paradise fire in its early stages. According to state officials, military crews lacked state-authorized training. On Saturday, November 1, two CH-53 Super Stallion helicopters from this Marine Corps base dropped water on the fire for the first time. The Paradise fire that started on XXXX claimed two lives and destroyed 169 homes.

San Bernardino County: Looting

Six Lake Arrowhead residents were arrested for looting and at least two of them were charged with impersonating fire officials.

Private Businesses: Donations & PR

As is often the case, the private sector has actively supported the response and relief efforts with food, water and other donations; however, some companies have interpreted the wildfire disaster as a business opportunity. Seeking good PR, several companies have placed large newspaper advertisements such as: "We support the victims and the brave firefighters" (Ralphs Supermarket); "Coverage beyond your expectations" (Chubb Insurance); "We're here to help you rebuild your home or your business" (Wells Fargo Bank); "Help your neighbors--please give generously" (Fire Relief Campaign by the Los Angeles Times & KTLA 5). Time will tell if these ads are truly promises of commitment and support to impacted people and communities or just cheap talk.

Legislation

"Natural Disasters fuel congressional action the way that bone-dry tinder fuels forest fires"
